ONSLOW COUNTY

Onslow County has a rich history of agriculture and fishing. The county stretches from fertile farmlands to coastal beaches offering visitors a wide variety of vistas and experiences.

Agriculture extends outward from the aptly named community of Richlands and throughout the county. Visitors can see expansive fields of cotton, corn, wheat, soybeans and tobacco as they drive through the area. Local farms also produce a wide variety of vegetables, fruit, nuts and livestock. These products can be sourced from the farm, roadside stands and farmers markets. Several wineries and breweries transform local product into unique beverages.

Jacksonville is nestled in the heart of Onslow County along the New River. Jacksonville offers many opportunities for visitors to shop, eat and enjoy the area. The community is strongly influenced by the presence of several military installations including Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Camp Johnson, and Air Station New River. In honor of this, Jacksonville is home to several military memorials and museums.

At the coast, the village of Sneads Ferry carries on its history of fishing and shrimping. Family-owned boats haul in the catch and deliver it to local fish houses. Nearby North Topsail Island provides prime access to the Atlantic Ocean and beautiful beaches. At the northeastern end of the county, Swansboro boasts a historic downtown waterfront with many quaint shops and local eateries. Nearby Hammocks Beach State Park provides a unique opportunity to learn about and enjoy the beauty of undeveloped barrier islands.
