CURRITUCK COUNTY

Currituck County, located in the Coastal Plain region of northeastern North Carolina, was formed in 1668, becoming one of the first areas settled in the United States. Named for an Algonquin Indian term meaning “the land of the wild goose,” Currituck is largely defined by the waterways (Atlantic Ocean, Albemarle Sound, Currituck Sound and North River), marshes, woods and plentiful farmland that surround the county.

During the late nineteenth century, sportsmen and outdoor enthusiasts discovered the area’s wonderful blend of natural beauty and abundant wildlife, soon creating a hunting and fishing oasis for several wealthy families from the northeastern United States. To this day, Currituck County is truly a sportsman’s paradise with fishing and hunting at the epicenter of local recreation.

Currituck County’s geographical landscape – its proximity to several large bodies of water and its rural, agricultural sprawl – provides a uniquely diverse flavor for local business and tourism, alike.

A trip through the Currituck mainland on U.S.-168 and U.S. 158 opens your eyes to the rich farming heritage here, with soybean, corn and wheat crops dominating the views, along with quaint farm stands that have provided local families with their livelihood for generations.

As your journey takes you south through lower Currituck County and across the sound to the Outer Banks, rural landscapes are replaced with picturesque, coastal backdrops. Travel and tourism to this breathtaking area has become the county’s lead economic driver, with hundreds of thousands of visitors arriving annually to enjoy the wonders of this seaside treasure. The quaint Currituck Outer Banks town of Corolla is defined by its awe-inspiring remote beaches, legendary wild horses (descendants of Spanish Colonial Mustangs that arrived with explorers centuries ago), iconic historical sites, abundant wildlife and spacious family-friendly accommodations.
