CABARRUS COUNTY

While Cabarrus County’s story is steeped in speed, the area is also home to serene spaces and some of the state’s most unique agricultural treasures.

Explore the moonshine-fueled roots of stock car racing, then get a taste of small-batch corn whiskey made behind bars in a former Mt. Pleasant prison. Learn the history of America’s first gold discovery, made by a 12-year-old boy on his family’s farm in Midland, then tour underground mine tunnels and pan for gold. Visit the Piedmont Farmer’s Market to shop fresh produce, meats, honey and more, then get a taste of these locally-grown ingredients at independent restaurants and breweries. Savor locally-made wine and the beautiful backdrops of area vineyards and event venues. Exercise alongside a working  farm on the Riverbend Farm Trail which joins the scenic Pharr Family Preserve Trail—both provide river access and are part of the regional Carolina Thread Trail network. Plus, enjoy a variety of on-farm experiences including pick-your-own, educational tours, volunteer opportunities and more.

Along with immersive agricultural activities, Cabarrus County partners are also dedicated to the advancement of the industry. In Kannapolis, the NC Research Campus is a collaborative scientific community where research and development efforts are focused on safer, more nutritious crops, healthier foods, and precision nutrition. In Concord, the Elma C. Lomax Research and Education Farm offers a Student Outdoor Immersive Learning program providing hands-on learning opportunities to college students, STEM activities for K-12, business incubation to Farmers-in-Training, and workshops for both farmers and the general public.
